Barbarians at the Gate
Siege cooking contest guidelines

Last update 5/17/11

Rumor has it, there is a "special" ingredient that will be provided to contestants... shhhhhh, its a secret!

1. If you have documentation great, however keep in mind there are no cook books from the Dark ages that have survived detailing what the Norse or surrounding areas ate, however having said that, there are sesh pit finds that give us great detail of what they ate, just not how it is prepared. So to stop rambling and to get to the point, if you use period items, I do award points for that, but please do offer documentation on how they are period. Also if you substitute say a potato instead of radish this is acceptable as well just make sure you state that it should be a radish etc. etc.

2. Presentation, you may think we Vikings wouldn't care what the food tastes like as long as its hot and a lot of it... but oh no, trust me we don't want to stick something in our mouths that doesn't look like it would be tasty, so presentation does get a point.

3. Taste is everything, basically at the end, if we feel like we would be stuffed but still wanting more, then that will win you not just points but kudos from us as well.

Now please keep in mind that if you want you can make as many items as you would like for an over all presentation, but you will only be judged on one item so let us know exactly what it is you want judged. We once had a woman make and entire meal including a desert, it was wonderful but unfortunately we didn't know what part to judge.

Be sure to have your entry ready and to the great feast hall by Saturday 4:30 pm, NO LATER THAN 4:45 pm or the Feastocrat will be the one you need to appease, she will make the horde of barbarians look like kittens!
